My husband owns a automatic winding watch. This means that it has no winder but the movements of his arm automatically wind the watch. This is fantastic as the watch needs no battery and so is good for the environment as well as saving money. However, it does have its disadvantages. If he does not wear the watch for a while it stops because it has not been wound up. Everyone knows how annoying it is if your watch has stopped and you do not realise and you run late, you may have missed appointments or just lost time. I have recently discovered that you can buy automatic watch winders where you can store you watch and it is gently moved or rotated so that it winds itself up. They are carefully designed so that they do not wind the watch all of the time, but they replicate the natural winding the watch would get when it is being worn and move on and off at intervals, which ensures that the watch does not get damaged. This is such a fantastic idea, it means that if you have several watches then you can leave one in the automatic winder and then it will still be working when you choose to wear it again. The automatic watch winders are a great idea for gifts for people who love their watches and you can even get then in really nice looking cases so they look very elegant on your bedside table. They often have storage for other watches, perhaps ones that run by battery. It is a great idea and a gift that I will be buying for everyone I know that has an automatically winding watch. I think that it will be a really unusual, useful and elegant gift to give to someone who really loves their watches.
